Profile – Mira Chorik

“I’m a theatre maker and songwriter. My work investigates loss and meaning-making through music, community performances and projects, experimental collaborations and site-specific installations. Inspired by research, by stories you have to lean in to hear, by forum theatre, verbatim interviews, and intimate moments that go untold, my work is devised, low-tech, and site-specific. I facilitate group workshops and conversations, and craft live performance spaces that invite participation, audience connection and emotional intimacy. I also host the Sunshine Coast Songwriters Roundtable, a supportive space for songwriters to meet and hone the art of storytelling with words and music. I’m blessed to live and work on Jinibara Country.”

Due to the visionary support of the Sunshine Coast Council Creative Industries Investment Program, Anywhere Festivals is thrilled to announce Mira Chorik as one of the creatives Supported by Anywhere Festivals—a groundbreaking new initiative designed to elevate creative work beyond the conventional.

Concept Name
Ekphrasis / Painting Melody (working title)

Concept Description

*CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT – the first showing will be as part of Anywhere Festival Moreton Bay in May 2025 to then take to Sunshine Coast locations

Ekphrasis / Painting Melody is a show celebrating contemporary visual art in a local context through songs that tumble imagery into mind and heart, and hand-drawn intimate stories.

A life-changing experience before a gold-framed portrait in Rome, transcendence on canvas, art and suffering in gestural line, unpicking gender stereotypes, colours and forms that make visible unseen labour, watercolour layers of quiet voices, and the pictures that start a movement.

In vivid description, Ekphrasis / Painting Melody blends the worlds of music and art. It offers a gentle invitation to slow down, and notice what can be seen in the space between plucked guitar notes. It welcomes an accessible and personal approach to the appreciation of art and visual language.

For seasoned gallery-goers, and for those who’ve never before stepped through the door of an art museum

What outcomes do you want from Supported by Anywhere Festivals (50 words)

Ekphrasis/Painting Melody will be performed three times in local galleries in the Moreton Bay region which will be an amazing refining process of the work in front of intimate audiences. I’d love to continue that refining process in Anywhere Festival Sunshine Coast and eventually, I’d love to tour this show to art galleries all over regional Queensland.

I’m hoping the show will appeal to local audiences who are engaged in making visual art themselves… and/or those who actively support the arts by visiting galleries, engage in patronage of artists, and art-appreciation activities… and/or those who are interested in creativity as a tool to enhance wellbeing.

mostly works alone – I’d love to be part of a community of performing artists who are actively making work in the world; and I’d also like to gain greater understanding of how the industry works on a local level and how my art might fit into and contribute to that conversation.
