MY 2023 Anywhere Top 5 Picks

Hi! I am Joel Royall-West, a digital artist based in Meanjin.

Born in Sydney and growing up on the sunshine coast, I live for all things creative. I studied at the Queensland University of Technology under a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) / Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Art).

While growing up watching my siblings perform in Anywhere Festival events, I never thought I’d see myself contributing to this year’s Anywhere Festival as an intern. But enough about me, here are my 5 picks for this year’s Anywhere Festival, in no particular order that is.

Beverly Kills Presents: Heaven and Hell

If you’re a fan of Drag and everything mixed in then you’ll know about Beverly Kills and her wild performances. After making an appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Season 2 and getting exceptionally close to winning the season, this queen knows what she’s doing.

As someone who’s recently been enticed into the world of Drag Queens and has gone to visit all types of Drag Shows, Beverly Kills leaves it all out on the stage and is a highly accredited performer.

Some could argue the fact of this performance was placed within a Church is irresponsible and insensitive, but I think it’s what makes the performance all the more exciting and thrilling to witness. This show is not for the faint-hearted and make sure you bring all the popcorn (not literally), you won’t regret it!

Are you lonesome tonight? By Melissa Westen

As a sell-out show with tickets running out fast, Melissa Western is a name that sings across the world. Her performances are something to remember and with her being a part of the Anywhere Festival in 2023, who wouldn’t take up the opportunity to witness her live at the Australian Modern.

For anyone who enjoys live music within a cozy venue, it is sure to be a wonderful night, the reminiscence of songs famous by the King of Rock and Roll along with a nostalgic nod to the movies themselves.

I would recommend anyone to come to visit and see for themselves the magic of Melissa Western alongside other exciting Musical performances that are taking place within Anywhere Festival this year!

FRI & SAT 6-7TH MAY @ 7:30-9 PM

How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse by ON Theatre

With the impending zombie pandemic upon us, it’s best to make sure you’re educated and equipped with the best tips and tricks by the most trusted medical practitioners.

HTSTZA (How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse) is an immersive comedic performance presented and produced by ON Theatre which sounds like as much a far-fetched, unrealistic scenario, anyone who is ready for the end of the world would love to come and watch this performance.

That being said, ON Theatre’s performance will shock, surprise, and crack a laugh from its audience members and provides a nerve-racking, realistic implication into the possibilities of our future, whether a zombie apocalypse can happen, I certainly hope not…right?

FRI, SAT & SUN 5-7TH MAY @ 6 PM.

Banshee’s Luck by Andrew Gillanders

A fantastical and elusive experience filled with immersive interactions and an audience-favoured outcome is a for sure act to be a part of. As ways of interacting and witnessing the outcome of a performance through the audience’s decisions are exciting and may bring out the true nature of your friends and family.

Located at the incredible paint factory, Banshee’s Luck draws out the most poignant emotions from the viewer and the performers and is something I certainly will be viewing myself.

I would recommend spending your time to go watch Banshee’s Luck as the experience is like no other across the Anywhere Festival lineup this year. It’s a one-of-a-kind show that deserves to be witnessed by everyone and anyone.

FRI & SAT 19-20TH MAY @ 5:00 & 7:30 PM

Recipe for Relativity By Here+There Productions

As last year’s Anywhere Festival sellout of the meticulous and amazing ‘In Melodiam’, Here+There Productions is providing again why they’re the forerunners for innovative immersive performances within the Escape Room genre. Escape rooms are a place of imagining and role-playing as the audience and the participant, and provide the greatest memories with others.

I love to solve puzzles and go through problems to solve in any way shape or form. Whether the route to a solution is a long, winding road, if I can get from Point A to Point B, I am always left satisfied.

It’s no exception that Here+There is back again this year for Anywhere Festival with another go at the escape room, and immersive and interactive performances, which is a must to go visit for anyone who loves a puzzling challenge.
