The 2022 Anywhere Festival will transform Brisbane’s local settings into exciting performance spaces exploding with creative activity this May.
With Anywhere Festival opening night’s free event hitting Fish Lane on the 5th of May this is an open invitation to all of Brisbane to come along and enjoy the nooks and crannies of Brisbane with an explosion of the arts! Get ready for a terrific range of diverse cultural experiences spanning the arts spectrum, including theatre, immersive, music, circus, cabaret, and dance, with 60 engaging productions presented in over 500 performances over 18 days from 5 to 22 May.
In the eleven years since the Anywhere Festival launched, it has seen two once in a lifetime floods. With the resilience of our artists, performers, venues and producers, Anywhere Festival has fought the floods again in 2022 allowing Brisbane to thrive in the arts space and allow audiences to experience the amazing talent and venues Brisbane has to offer by presenting performances in nooks and crannies anywhere.
Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said, “By presenting exceptional arts experiences, Anywhere Festival contributes to Brisbane’s rich creative landscape and contributes to Queensland’s reputation for delivering engaging festivals and events that grow cultural tourism and enliven our communities.”
“I invite everyone to experience the creative energy of Anywhere Festival in 2022,” Minister Enoch said.
Anywhere, means Anywhere and this year the festival has secured some of the most unusual spaces and venues to play host to these amazing shows. From performances tucked away in backyards, reservoirs, World War 2 aircraft engine testing facilities, senate rooms, churches, junk bars and old paint factories, each year it is something different. This year, there isn’t a nook or cranny that hasn’t been covered.
“Brisbane is a great place to live, work and relax, and the Anywhere Festival is another example of how the creative industries continue to thrive in Brisbane” says Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.
Lord Mayor Schrinner adds, “Anywhere Festival will feature over 500 performances in genres including drama, comedy, immersive theatre and more. Residents and visitors will be able to experience these performances in unexpected places like local businesses and people’s residences across the city, from Nudgee Beach to West End, and Carina to Mt Coot-tha.”
“Anywhere is the only festival where the joy of watching live performance is matched by the absolute randomness of the space” Paul Osuch, Anywhere Festival Founder and Artistic Director said.
“Performers really love bringing shows to life in these unique locations and audiences love the experience and the thrill of not quite knowing what they are going to get so it’s a win-win”. Paul Osuch, Anywhere Festival Founder and Artistic Director said.
Anywhere Festival brings the extraordinary to ordinary places, making performance more accessible.
“The idea came about because I believe that performance and the arts should be central to our lives and not just something we ‘go to a theatre’ for,” said Paul. “By making it possible for performances to happen anywhere, many people realise that the arts can and should be anywhere and start seeing the local spots in a completely new light.”
“Audiences and performance makers are crying out for performances where we live, work and breathe,” said Paul.
“The talent we have in this state can’t be contained within traditional theatres, and that’s one of the reasons the Anywhere Festival has spread beyond Brisbane to feature 500 performances this year.”
Against the backdrop of the past two years where COVID interfered with the release of a full program of events, Anywhere Festival is officially back and support is needed across the board for businesses and artists alike.
Come down to Fish Lane on May 5th from 5:30pm for the free opening night event and experience the start of the most colourful Anywhere Festival yet!
