The Drama Merchant

The head of the drama department, at my old high school, offered me this advice “You don’t need to go to university straight away to become a teacher. Go out and gain some real life experience in your chosen field first.”
So I did just that, and began my journey to become a Drama teacher by developing my skills & experience within the Gold Coast Community Theatre Scene, working with various mentors & people as an actor & director, and balancing my work life with my creativity. I acted and directed various stage shows until 2015, when I won Best Director & tied for outstanding community production, for a show called Accomplice by Rupert Holmes, at the Gold Coast Theatre Palm Awards. In the same year I ventured away from community theatre and entered the world of Independent theatre with Anywhere Festival – Brisbane, under my own company name Nathan Schulz presents. Here I wrote, directed & produced two immersive site specific ghost stories in an oddities shop called Lights Out Vol. 1 (2015) and The Curiosity Experiment (2016) before taking scripts traditionally performed on stages and giving them an intimate site specific treatment.

Following my teachers advice, and swapping text books & lectures, in the field of the creative arts, for real life experiences, it has been kind of fun doing the impossible, creating my unique brand of entertainment, both site specific and audio, and becoming The Drama Merchant.
