Trichotomy & Black Square QuartetJazz trio + strings at the Anywhere Festival

Award winning jazz trio TRICHOTOMY are no strangers to collaboration. The group – who have
performed together for over 20 years – have as history of working with a variety of acclaimed
musicians, from classical group Topology, dance company ‘Expressions’ and folk-country
troubadour Danny Widdicombe.

After spending 2020 recording new music featuring percussionist Nozomi Omote, and releasing
it as lush multimedia packages, the group now present a new collaboration with the inventive
string quartet BLACK SQUARE.

For TWO SHOWS as part of the ANYWHERE FESTIVAL in Brisbane and Moreton Bay, the jazz trio
present performances that deftly blend jazz and classical sounds. The performance features a
selection of works featuring on the groups past release “live with string quartet” and new
arrangements specifically for these performances.

Those familiar with Trichotomy will know of the group’s ability to craft captivating melodies,
dense rhythmic grooves and lush textural sounds. This is modern jazz, but with elements of
ambient and minimalist music – with similarities to the sounds of Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds.
The addition of string quartet gives an extra dimension to the music – creating a truly memorable
musical experience.

As Trichotomy pianist Sean Foran says – ‘it’s been too long since we’ve performed with string
quartet, and it’s a really natural fit for the band. The music we write lends itself to strings, so it
gives us a chance to stretch out more and performing some lush harmonic stuff. Plus the Black
Square are incredible… so they can play anything!’.

The two performances, one in Brisbane at the Holy Trinity Church Hall, and one in North Lakes at
the Library deck, are presented as part of the ANYWHERE FESTIVAL. Limited tickets for both
shows.
