Theatre of the Last Breath: An Immersive Journey into Your Own Mortality

Friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate the life of… YOU.

Brisbane artist and funeral celebrant Annie Caulfield invites audiences to step into the unknown with Theatre of the Last Breath—a bold, immersive theatre experience that explores death, dying, and what it means to truly live.

Theatre of the Last Breath offers a tender, funny, and quietly transformative journey into your own imagined funeral. This is not a show you watch from afar. Instead, it’s an intimate and personal exploration of your own mortality, a chance to reflect on the life you’re living and what will remain when you are dead.

From ashes and embalming to cardboard coffins and eco burials, nothing is off-limits. The performance blends ritual, storytelling, and sensory theatre to open up conversations we so often shy away from. In a culture that avoids talking about death, Theatre of the Last Breath creates space for curiosity, honesty, and connection, reminding us that while death is inevitable, the way we meet it can be full of meaning.

“This show is about inviting people to imagine their own ending, and in doing that, to think deeply about what matters most in their lives right now,” Annie says. “It’s tender, it’s a bit playful, and it holds space for both the beauty and the discomfort of talking about death.”

Drawing from her years of experience working closely with families as a funeral director and celebrant, Annie brings a unique perspective that is grounded in real-world experience, care, and a passion for demystifying death.

Audiences are invited to stay for light refreshments after the show, where they can share stories, reflect together, and continue celebrating the life of… YOU.

Theatre of the Last Breath is part of Annie’s ongoing mission to encourage open and creative conversations around death and dying—supporting people to engage with these big topics in ways that are meaningful and deeply human.
