Review – Murder at the Bowlo
The perfect Crime and a meat tray?
Murder at the Bowlo is exactly the kind of night out you don’t realise you’ve been craving until you’re in the thick of it — the nostalgia, the characters, the carpet, the committee politics, the cold beers, the “local legends” who’ve been on the board since the dawn of time. It’s all there, wrapped up in a murder mystery that feels both lovingly familiar and delightfully chaotic.
If you grew up in bowls clubs, you will LOVE the nostalgia and the characters. Thankfully, I was too young to remember a bowlo in 1987, but judging from my memories of the 90s, the crew absolutely nailed the vibe. The outfits, the mannerisms, the dry humour, the subtle digs, the “we’ve always done it this way” energy — it’s perfection.
They weren’t serving any Foster’s (probably a mercy), but the zero beers I had were excellent and proved that even a classic bowlo can keep up with the tastes of today’s patrons across Brisbane and Moreton Bay. The whole venue had that perfect blend of old‑school charm and friendly staff.
Now, the murder…
Strap in and hold on, because it’s a bumpy but brilliantly played ride.
As someone who’s been a murder mystery host myself, I can hands‑down say this show is on point. The pacing, the clues, the character work — it’s all tight, funny, and perfectly pitched. Not over the top. Not demanding too much from the audience. Just enough in all the right ways.
The cast had the room in the palm of their hand and made sure every clue landed with gusto for anyone paying attention. I sat right at the back — prime “forgotten table” territory — and still felt included. The crew made sure no one missed out, weaving through the room with confidence, charm, and just the right amount of cheek.
The atmosphere? Spot on.
It was, and I quote, “a great night that felt like we were at a real AGM at the local bowlo.” Thanks to Carolyn and Byron — two random legends I sat with — for that perfect summary.
The whole night had that familiar community‑hall energy:
- the passionate regulars
- the committee dramas
- the friendly ribbing
- the sense that everyone knows everyone’s business
- the “we’re all in this together” vibe
It felt authentic in the best possible way.
If you’re looking for a night out that feels like stepping back in time…
Down a few coldies, listen to passionate characters yarn on about their beloved local, and try your luck at winning a true‑blue meat tray — this is your show.
It’s a bloody brilliant night out. PS. Say hi to Gladys for me 💋
