Review: Aiden Schofield, Magician

It’s been a while since I’ve watched a magic show. Aiden Schofield, who played Arcana’s stage in Moorooka on Friday evening (26 July), was a solid meat-and-potatoes reintroduction to the genre.

Aiden covered a good range of tricks, with lots of old favourites (rope magic, ring magic, mentalism), plus a few I hadn’t seen before. He performed smoothly, and had a good sense of humour to go along with it. The pun game was strong.

Magic relies on perspective and angles, and from my vantage point (front left) I could see how a lot of the tricks were done. Arcana’s cabaret-style setup is not really optimised for magicians, and I think they perhaps should have roped off the side-stage tables for Aiden’s show. It didn’t affect my enjoyment (I personally tend to enjoy magic more when I know how it’s done—I like the psychology and craftiness of it), but if you like your magic mysterious, make sure you’re sitting front on to the stage.

Overall, a fun evening. I think this would be a great show to take kids to.
