Review by Katrina Lee of Mythical Creatures – mystical and magical

✨ Review: Mythical Creatures– Anywhere Festival ✨

The enchanted garden of mythical creatures isn’t what you expect — it’s so much more.

As a performer, I understand the logistics, limitations, and sheer cost of creating a production. So let me begin by saying: for the budget this team is working with, they absolutely hit the mark and then some.

When you imagine stepping into an enchanted garden, you picture lush greenery, hidden pathways, earthy scents, soft moss, surprise mushrooms, waterfalls, merfolk, fae drifting through the air — maybe even a fire‑breathing dragon.

Once you move past the concrete walls and allow your mind to forget the city outside, you can sink into the world they’ve created. And suddenly, all those imagined elements come alive. This is a family show for all ages and as long as you can still step into “make believe” you can enjoy all its elements and surprises.

The creatures and mythical beings you encounter are genuinely delightful. Even though I see performance techniques and illusions regularly, I found myself watching with fresh eyes — and that’s exactly how this show should be experienced.

The standout of the night was the narrator/host. Their command of the room, their presence, and the way they guided the audience made the story more believable and the journey easier to follow.

The cast features performers of different levels — as is the heart of Anywhere Theatre Festival — and it was wonderful to see all ages represented on stage.

If I have one criticism, it’s this: this show deserves a bigger budget. Someone needs to fund this production into a larger space and back it properly, because the writing, the concept, the performers, and the heart behind it are brilliant. The team deserves a set and stage that match their talent.

So if you are or know a producer or funding body looking to invest in a performance with real potential — go and see Mythical Creatures. The possibilities are palpable.

From the bar to the elements — air, earth, fire, and even water — this team captures the spirit of Anywhere Theatre Festival beautifully.

Chookas to the whole cast and crew. Review by Katrina Lee
