Bold New Australian Play Crow’s Nest Tackles the Cost of Living Crisis at 2025 Anywhere Festival
In a time where the cost of living continues to escalate, a fearless new Australian play is set to ignite conversation and call for action. Crow’s Nest, a raw and provocative work by emerging queer interdisciplinary theatre-maker Nic Davidson— presented by The Velvet Collective and The Travelling Rose Theatre will premiere in Queensland as part of the 2025 Anywhere Festival, running from 31 July to 3 August at The Station in Fortitude Valley.
Set in the heart of Brisbane’s housing turmoil, Crow’s Nest follows three dysfunctional young artists —Turtle, Libby, and Juniper—whose lives are thrown into chaos after receiving an unexpected eviction notice. As their beloved decrepit share-house is earmarked for sale, the trio mobilises in protest. But in the fight for their future, cracks appear in their relationships, and one life-altering decision forces them to confront the personal cost of resistance.

This 90-minute contemporary drama dives deep into Australia’s Cost of Living Crisis while
unearthing themes of class divide, homeownership guilt, masked queer misogyny, dysfunctional paternal bonds, and the queer working-class experience. While rooted in the Australian context, the play’s urgent themes resonate across borders, offering global audiences a mirror to their own struggles.
“Crow’s Nest is loud. It’s bold. It’s uncomfortable,” says Davidson. “But most importantly, it’s a call to action—for young people, for queer people, for working-class people, and for anyone feeling crushed under the weight of today’s systems.”
Presented as a co-production between The Velvet Collective and The Travelling Rose Theatre, Crow’s Nest promises to be a standout event in the 2025 Anywhere Festival lineup.
This is theatre that refuses to sit quietly—and neither should you.
