“Metamorphosis”: A groundbreaking solo show lifting the lid on our relationships with men and our attitudes towards men, and motivating a transformation in men’s relationship with themselves.
Brisbane, QLD – August 2nd, 7pm — experienced actor and writer Calvin Smith is set to deliver a powerful new solo performance, Metamorphosis, at the Brisbane Planetarium — a raw, humorous, and deeply personal journey that confronts the hidden perils of modern manhood and sets the scene for us all to take a fresh look at our contemporary prejudices about men.
This intimate, in-the-round production fuses theatre, music, video, and poetry to explore a provocative question: What has really happened to men over the last 50 years — and why aren’t we talking about it more, talking about it honestly; and why is it a taboo to talk openly about the pervasive prejudices that characterise our attitudes towards men?
Through the lens of his own story — from growing up a sensitive boy in the 1960s, to becoming a card-carrying feminist, and now a recovering one — Smith tackles the pervasive and often overlooked effects of misandry, societal neglect, and the emotional repression expected of men. His message is clear: real change begins not with criticism, but with understanding and compassion.
“This show will challenge and inspire,” says Smith. “We talk about ‘fixing men’, but we don’t ask why they’re broken. Boys are raised without models of vulnerability. They’re mocked, misunderstood, and their inner lives are made invisible, to us and to them too! Boys raised this way become men incapable of fully living, of fully loving, and of fully accepting themselves. That has to change. But to make that change happen, we all need to do better”.
With a full-dome video projection system, lush sound, and only 125 seats, the Brisbane Planetarium is transformed into an intimate, immersive, emotional, theatrical experience. Expect laughter, tears, and the healing power of story, as Smith embodies the awkward, wounded, and hopeful spirit of a boy trying to make sense of his world, and of a man who claims to have cracked the code.
