It’s Anywhere Time! Top Picks for 2023

Hi, I’m Lachlan.

I was apart of Anywhere Festival in 2021 and 2022, and this year I’m undertaking an internship. Woo hoo!

The festival is a treasure trove of the latest and greatest offerings from talented locals. It’s always SO much fun, and you never know what you’ll discover. Literally: There are shows bursting from every nook and cranny of the city! Best to be careful when walking around Brisbane this May…

But what to see? Any particular gems this year? I genuinely do recommend everything (I challenge you to see 50 shows in two weeks!), but here are some picks that I am most looking forward to.

A Drop Too Many

A Drop Too Many is truly ‘performance anywhere’. Be prepared for an outdoor performance where you may or not get your hands dirty. It draws on recent extreme weather events in Australia, making this an important story that needs to be told. Read more:

This wet and muddy outdoor experience is brought to life through spoken word, fluid movement and moving visuals, encapsulating the experience of being at the mercy of our ever-harshening climate.

Directed by Zen Zen Zo company member and QUT drama student, Maxi Mossman, and told through an authentically Australian lens. Don’t miss out on this thought-provoking, sensory, debut production!

May 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th @ Cannon Hill Anglican College

Now this looks like a ball! Everyone wants to be a celebrity, and this experience puts you centre stage. Ridiculousness and absurdity guaranteed. Featuring the best of the best: Stefan Cooper-Fox (Adelaide Fringe) and Johanna Lyons (Borishkiva). Read more:

Eco-Warrior: A Climate Cabaret

There’s a lot to look forward to with this one. Tap dancing, saxophone playing (surely that’s enough already!?), ukulele, loop pedals and singing too. Good luck Hannah! I love a good cabaret. Not only does Eco-Warrior have a lot of punch, it’s also deeply about the climate crisis and perfectly located at The Wilderness Society offices in South Brisbane. Read more:

Hannah is a hot-mess, just like our planet. Can she single-handedly mitigate climate change and ecological collapse with her voice, saxophone, tap shoes, loop pedal and a ukulele? Probably not, but she’s gonna try…. eventually… once she’s stopped procrastinating, getting overwhelmed, being such a perfectionist and constantly getting distrac- oh look, there goes a chicken!

5th, 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th of May @ The Wilderness Society Brisbane Offices

Angel Strings at the Planetarium

Live classical music and stunning views of the solar system in the iconic Planetarium Skydome at Mount Coot-tha. Kinda perfect when you think about it. Any 2001: A Space Odyssey fans here? I’m looking forward to my tour through space and serenaded by a top notch quartet. Read more:

Angel Strings usher you through space, merging the divine majesty of the outer universe with sublime string quartet repertoire. Featuring works by Philip Glass, Ravel, Max Richter, Karl Jenkins and Elgar, expect your breath to be taken away.

Narelle and Leah reminiscing

Whistling Past The Graveyard

I find Whistling Past The Graveyard really charming. What a neat concept and combination of stories and song. Being in a cemetery, it’s probably not for the faint hearted, but these lovely people will definitely look after you. Read more:

On a lovely autumn afternoon in May among the old stone monuments, two talented raconteurs will share fascinating reflections about funerals and the end of life.

In Whistling Past the Graveyard, Doctor Leah Cotterell and Mistress Narelle McCoy will draw from their written memoirs and academic research to look at the best and worst of funerals, from the sad to the sublime and the uplifting. The musical materials will be as eclectic as the subject matter, ranging from classical and folk song to emblematic pop songs and of course, together we will sing ‘Amazing Grace’. These wonderfully eclectic singing stylists will be accompanied by the world-class talents of Jamie Clark (guitar) and Luke Moller (Irish fiddle).

6th and 7th of May @ South Brisbane Cemetery

Okay. Now go and enjoy all of that (and more!) Looking forward to seeing you there!
