Who was Jack the Ripper? Well, if you are interested in finding out, join magician Pete Booth and mentalist Sean Mergard for an hour and half of brilliant tricks, illusions, mind reading, and if you are lucky the ghost of the man himself might just appear to tell you the truth.
Turning Tricks 2: Mystics, Maniacs & Murderers is the second performance by Booth and Mergard, the first of which was sold-out at last year’s Anywhere Festival, and having now enjoyed a dark evening with them myself, I can understand why. The evening was an incredible blend of comedy and illusions and when I wasn’t searching (unsuccessfully) for wires, strings, hidden actors and trap doors to explain their mind blowing on-stage tricks, I was laughing along with the rest of the audience members inside the functioning warehouse.
It is not just their incredible skills as magicians and mentalists that drew a crowd to the evening’s show but also their ability to involve as many different audience members as possible. I think by the end of the 90mins at least half of us had jumped up on stage to be a part of some outstanding trick and even those of us who were left in our seats had the opportunities to be involved in whole-group illusions. We also were lucky enough to each walk away with a small token designed for our own illusions and trickery and I can’t wait to try mine out on the next unsuspecting friend I spend time with.
Whilst the Jack the Ripper plot seemed to be only loosely tied to the whole performance, the pair returned to their search for the true murderer at the end of the evening for a grand and scream-inducing conclusion.
When I left the Amerex Warehouse in Seven Mile Rocks I was slightly sad and a little annoyed at myself… for missing the first installment of Turning Tricks in 2014. I can only hope the boys will be back next year, and if so, you will find me first in line to buy my ticket.
