THE NOMI SHOW AT HEYA BAR – AN UNDERGROUND ART ROCK PARTY FOR THE AGES
A group of Brisbane performers, united by their love of the weird and the wondrous, will come together in this underground extravaganza to pay tribute to the “healing power of art rock”.
Produced as a part of Brisbane’s Anywhere Festival, The Nomi Show will feature live musical performances, standup comedy and theatre – as well as a dance party into the night.
The show will open with Brisbane band LOVE MOVES, who will perform a series of tributes and original work off their new album.
MC-ing the show is Cecile Blackmore – who will be sharing some insights into her former life as a dollar-store mall goth and how listening to good music can save your life.
The show was initially inspired by the maverick life and times of German New Wave opera superstar Klaus Nomi, whose stage persona was that of a pale-faced alien. Klaus brought his otherworldly, theatrical touch and soaring vocals to pop covers, opera and original works.
Sadly Klaus died from complications related to AIDS in 1983 at 39 – one of the first people to die from the disease. His work was cut short to only two albums and a half-finished opera, but online communities still pore over his work religiously, watching and re-watching his six music videos and frantically hunting for new photos and footage thirty years on. THE NOMI SHOW is a celebration of that feeling – of community, of a nostalgia for old artists, of a lust to create new works that are inspired by the old.
Produced by Kristian Fletcher, whose cult and retro events have long been a safe place for beautiful oddballs with a love of the music of yesteryear, THE NOMI SHOW combines the wacky glammed-up fun of a retro dance party with some spectacular tributes and some original work. A DJ will play late into the night with all your weird and wonderful favourites – Nomi, Bowie, Bjork, Kate Bush, Prince, Gaga and many more.
THE NOMI SHOW will be held at Heya Bar – one of Brisbane’s coolest underground bars featuring a wide and delicious range of Asian-inspired pub food and beers, wines and cocktails galore. Come downstairs, turn right and experience THE NOMI SHOW.
There will be a prize for Best Dressed – think Bjork’s swan, a Mighty Boosh monster or just anything Bowie ever wore. The weirder the better! (If you’re going to wear a meat dress, please don’t use real meat)
Profits from this show will be donated to AIDS Council Queensland.
