A Couch in the Cane

Presented by Independent Graduates from QUT

A poetic exploration of home, friendship and belonging.

A Couch in the Cane explores the story of six friends, serendipitously brought together in their hometown of Toppin Gully after parting ways at the end of high school.

Tensions arise as the 20-somethings negotiate and re-negotiate friendships as adults confronted by the societal pressures and expectations imposed by life in Toppin Gully.

Their friendships strengthen, dissolve, or coalesce in the presence of a well-worn couch, which exists across the warped, nostalgic spaces of characters’ presents and pasts.

A Couch in the Cane explores notions of ‘home’, patriarchal pressures and adult friendships, ultimately asking us to challenge stereotypical ideas of gendered friendship in contemporary society.
