Across two nights, the exotic and intimate Wawahine Lounge will host two incredible acts, filling the vintage tiki-styled garden room with Island Soul and Calypso Blues from first gentleman of the ukelele Bobby Alu, and the Aloha Boys, featuring ARIA-nominated guitarist and singer, Danny Widdicombe.
Night One, 14th May: Bobby Alu
Amidst smooth harmonies, rhythms inspired by a strong family lineage of Polynesian performance, and unassuming grooves that work a gradual, smile-inducing high through even a casual listener, Bobby Alu tunes have a way of sneaking into the subconscious and taking up residence. Every now and then, one will pop up as a toe- tapping reminder to take it slow and enjoy the ride. It’s the curator of calm’s way; deliver island-time vibes with gentle optimism rather than forceful instruction, and encourage the type of reflection best achieved in a hammock.
“His chilled out Pacific tunes have a long-lasting feel good effect and his finely crafted songs have instant appeal.” ABC Radio Australia
“Smooth hammock music genius.” The AU Review
Night Two, 21st May: The Aloha Boys
Soulful story-telling, humour and superb musicianship unite the Aloha Boys, a unique trio of artists whose music pays no attention to boundaries. Calypso, country-blues, bossa nova, The Beatles and original songs all find their way into a mesmerising show that features Australia’s pedal-steel guitar maestro Michel Rose, the fluid, percussive grooves of Kym Ambrose and the heartfelt vocals and Chet Atkins finger-pickin’ Gretsch vibes of ARIA nominated Danny Widdicombe.
The show will also feature a tribute to the late, great Michael Nesmith, with guest vocalist Anje West performing songs from BEYOND THE BLUE HORIZON, originally conceived with Aloha Boys for Anywhere Festival in 2020.
“Absolutely fantastic! What a joy. The arrangements, voicing, and the risks taken. The outcome was so settled and effortless. Thank you”.
Greg S. (Lord Mayor’s City Hall Concert)
“That was the best concert I’ve been to in ages”
