Muses Trio 10th Anniversary: Colour Through

Muses Trio’s 10th anniversary celebrations in kaleidoscopic colour at the Red Box

Presented by:

Muses Trio and Anywhere Festival

Presented by Muses Trio and Anywhere Festival.

PLEASE NOTE: This event has two performances at 6:30 and 8:30 respectively.

Muses Trio returns to Anywhere Festival to celebrate their 10th anniversary in kaleidoscopic tones with Colour Through. Set in Brisbane’s hidden gem, the Red Box at the State Library of Queensland, with views of the river city’s nightlights with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Colour Through is an exquisitely curated performance highlight of Muses’ birthday year, celebrating a decade of music exclusively performed and composed by women.

How is colour evoked through music? How are shades such as Pale Yellow, Fiery Red, Blue Silence, or Pearl expressed through sound?  Can a colour-notated musical score change creative expression? What movie do you see in your mind while listening to the soundtrack to an imaginary film? Colour Through is a vibrant exploration of colour depicted through music and (imaginary) film, featuring a world premiere by emerging Brisbane composer, Frankie Dyson-Reilly, alongside works by Elena Kats-Chernin (AUS), Sally Whitwell (AUS), Nicole Murphy (AUS), and Jennifer Higdon (USA).

Colour Through offers curious arts lovers the inimitable experience of live chamber music in the stunning Red Box, celebrating the river city with a glittering backdrop over South Bank for an experience to treasure.  This program is supported by The Creative Sparks Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council to support local arts and culture in Brisbane.

Doors open 15 min prior to the performance beginning. The Red Box is easily accessible via public transport, or parking at South Bank. You can choose from the many nearby bars and / or restaurants at South Bank before or after the show.

“An edgy, compelling, powerful, memorable and often-moving performance”, “spine-chilling” Catherine Lawrence, Anywhere Festival 2016.

“…when they perform together, something magical happens…held audience members in the palm of their hands the minute they stepped on stage” – Hushbiz.com

Muses Trio are some of Australia’s leading and most exciting musicians in contemporary classical music, known for their edgy, spine tingling and virtuosic performance style: Principal Artists Christa Powell (violin), Louise King (cello) and Therese Milanovic (piano).

Muses Trio celebrate music composed by women, performed by women, and focus on bringing this relatively unknown, yet vastly deserving collection of works to the stage and enthralled audiences. 2023 is the tenth anniversary of their debut and there is much to celebrate.

Signatures of their carefully curated public performance events are guest speakers/ performers with an inspiring cause, and a focus on creating memorable experiences. Discovering, inspiring, collaborating, commissioning, connecting and supporting creative women to pursue and share artistic excellence drives the passion and impetus of their artistic focus. They have released three albums: The Spirit and the Maiden, Celebrating Clara, and Music for Calm and Catharsis. Together they have celebrated ten seasons, with performances across Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Northern NSW, Canberra, Sydney Fringe Festival, and Bundaberg’s Milbi Festival.

In 2019 they began recording the first installment of their album with ABC Classic. Although interrupted due to Covid-19, the first tracks have been released on ABC Classic’s Women of Note Vol 3, featuring world premiere works by living Australian women composers. In 2020, they received the ABC Fresh Start Fund to commission and record Fire Dances for ABC Classic, comprising a short dance from a women composer in each Australian state and territory, reflecting on their experiences of the 2019-2020 devastating bushfire season, released on ABC Classic’s Women of Note Vol 4.  The Road Not Taken EP (2023) is their debut release for the University of Queensland’s Corella label.

This performance is at the Red Box, State Library of Queensland, a hidden gem with floor-to-ceiling glass panels, suspended over the Brisbane River.
