Five Quick-Tempered Dances

Presented by Black Square Quartet

Rhythms that Stir, Melodies that Ignite

Intrepid trailblazers Black Square Quartet bring an electrifying fusion of rhythm and movement to the stage with Five Quick-Tempered Dances—a dynamic program of contemporary string quartet music, inspired by dance.

At the heart of the programme is Brisbane composer Thomas Green’s String Quartet No. 2, a high-energy work commissioned by BSQ during the pandemic. Green reflects on the collaboration, saying, “This experience with the quartet, resulting in this piece, is one of my favourite musical experiences of my life.”

The journey continues with Jessie Montgomery’s percussive Voodoo Dolls, a bold and energetic piece drawing from West African drumming traditions. Audiences will also experience a brand-new work by BSQ’s own Mike Patterson, showcasing his innovative compositional voice.

The program concludes with Brisbane-born Philip Eames’ bold and eccentric reimagining of Duke Ellington’s Blue Bubbles, where jazz collides with playful twists and contemporary energy.
