Anywhere Festival to pay artists to perform anywhere during COVID-19

Anywhere Festival is looking for performers and storytellers to be a part of the first new paid season of performances since the coronavirus hit.

Performance makers of dance, poetry, comedy, storytelling, theatre, circus are invited to express interest with an idea to be delivered under COVID-19 restrictions over the coming months.

“Anywhere Festival is about telling our stories through live experiences anywhere but theatres,” said Anywhere Festival Founder Paul Osuch.

Anywhere Festival is in its tenth year of subverting traditional theatre with performances in the nooks and crannies of Brisbane, Noosa and Sunshine Coast. Spas, ships, lighthouses, cafes and backyards are all performance spaces in Anywhere Festival.

This season has been made possible by the biggest donation made to Anywhere Festival by an individual.

“The donor wanted to donate to an organisation that could work directly with independent artists falling through the cracks of many of the government schemes, which is most independent artists,” said Paul.

Traditionally, Anywhere Festival works on a model in which independent artists present work in a May festival through Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Noosa and make money through their box office.  Anywhere Festival will provide up to $1,500 per project to provide a lifeline for artists to develop and present fascinating ideas over the next few months under COVID-19 restrictions.

An example is Social Distance Slumber Party, with local company Glitter Martini due to present an already sold out variety performance in May over Zoom. Audiences watch from home and are encouraged to dress in their best pyjamas.

“Our show was going to be presented at 2020 Anywhere Festival. After talking, we played around with the idea and turned it into something we think might be even more fun than we had originally planned,” said Darcie Boatswain from Glitter Martini.

Show ideas could be one-offs, a run of performances or ongoing events on a regular basis. Projects will be co-presented by Anywhere Festival and have access to resources from creative development through to marketing and ticketing.

“It is very important that experiences are as accessible as possible so we want to see how shows can make the most of Auslan translation and closed captioning.” said Paul.

Applications are open to anyone, with a focus on independent artists in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Noosa and further afield in Queensland.

“We know it might just be a small drop in the ocean for independent artists,” said Paul. “But with enough drops we will have an ocean.”
