Installation, performance and accessible technology: Vulcana announces “As If No-one Is Watching” presenting at the beautiful Newstead House as part of Anywhere Theatre Festival

Friday 17 – Sunday 19 May

“In As If No-one Is Watching they have created a production that is both an incredibly intimate and dense exploration of women’s internal worlds and a whimsical, gloriously weird, life-affirming celebration of what they can achieve together.”Adam Wood, Nothing Ever Happens In Brisbane, 2018 Brisbane Powerhouse

“Performance art, installation, spoken word, expressive … circus made this a night to remember.”Sally Peters, Arts Hub 2018 Brisbane Powerhouse

Bringing women together from all walks of life as they break their silence: Vulcana is inviting you to bear witness to the secrets that women keep. Wander this intimate installation and listen in as women share intimacies from the private realm of secrets and desires. Body image, working motherhood, how to think in mathematics and music, intergenerational eating disorders, the discovery of self-love, walking alone at night and what that means as a woman. This collection of stories by these women, told in their voice, reflects their diverse realities and experiences and accompanies their unique performances. Being immersed in this experience, watching and listening in, is like wandering through intimate artworks in a gallery, or winding through private rooms in a house.

Vulcana creates bold, intricate, and meaningful contemporary circus, using circus and movement to express the ideas of transformation, risk and diversity, and to promote positive images of women, trans and non-binary genders. Vulcana is an incubator for artists and provides opportunities for new collaborations, creative development and presentation of new work.By engaging with people of all ages, as artists, arts-workers, participants and audience members, Vulcana create opportunities to participate in physical and creative processes and programs that incorporate the circus traditions of inclusiveness, strength, excitement and daring.
