Artists with disability to stop Frankston foot traffic

Get Out!, Arts Access Victoria’s disability arts ensemble, will rove the streets of Frankston in August performing The Butterfly Surgeons, as part of the Frankston Anywhere Festival.

With a host of whimsical tools, the Get Out! ensemble will perform “butterfly surgery” on volunteer patients to remove unwanted nervous energy. These encounters will take place wherever there are people wanting to be cured of nerves—from high school students before an exam, to performers backstage at a concert, to people waiting to see a doctor.

Of this unique and engaging production, The Butterfly Surgeons co-director Lea Czikowski says, “These interactive community encounters will be accessible to all ages and groups with artists offering their wonderfully strange yet curiously fun theatrical butterfly surgical expertise as a community service.”

Co-director Katie Lockett explains the origin of The Butterfly Surgeons,

“When Get Out! presented its theatre show, Frog in a Cage last year, the performers developed the notion of the “Butterfly Surgeon” as a humorous yet tender way to counter the nervous energy—or butterflies—that the artists experienced before stepping out on stage each night.”

Get Out! is a respite program for adults with disability that meets fortnightly on Saturdays at Frankston Arts Centre.
